Slogan to work with: No Human is Without Rights Focusing on the right to food and the access to those resources, with a primary research on U.S. college students; has a strong passion for this topic while working at FUEL NKU and watching in real-time how it affects our campus alone. Food Insecurity: the condition of not having access to sufficient food, or food of an adequate quality, to meet one's basic needs.

“…many of us use the terms hunger and food insecurity interchangeably and equate them with an image of an emaciated child in Africa who may not have eaten for days. That is not the reality of food insecurity. By definition, food insecurity is the state of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. The trope of students eating cheap ramen every night would actually be a perfect picture of low food security. Often college students who experience food insecurity develop disrupted eating patterns and unhealthy food options in order to “eat on a dime.””

A Little Behind the Scenes

PSA/ADVOCACY POSTER DESIGN
Using one of the slogans listed below, design a poster that makes a compelling visual statement, encouraging members of the public to understand your subject and point-of-view. All visual components of the poster design—content/type, composition, and visual character—should support this intent. An appropriate non-profit organization logo may be subtly incorporated into the design for context.

Mood Board:

  • Ideas and feelings of solitude and insecurity

  • Empty dishes to indicate reaching for food

  • More mild colour palettes

Four initial ideas for the poster design

  1. Dark green background so the white pops

  2. Dark blue background was preferred, started setting up the data points

  3. Separated the content into two categories

  4. Draft of final poster design

Why is Food Insecurity an Issue on College Campuses?

• The cost of a college education is prohibitively expensive — 180% rise

• 2022 US 4-year degree average $34,564 annually *In-state and out of state average

• 1982 US 4-year degree average $4868 annually *in-state and out of state average

• Student loan burdens continue to grow and graduates leave college with more debt

• The cost of everything continues to increase

• On-campus housing and food services are often income producing ventures that support other university services

• Wages have not increased with costs and often student workers (graduate and PhD students included) are paid subliving wages for their labour

• Specific populations, such as student athletes, have their incomes regulated

• Food offered on college campuses is often not healthy or affordable

• Affordable childcare options are often not available for parents pursuing degree

• Most students are not eligible for public assistance programs; or even if they are, these programs do not provide enough to cover basic need

• Racism and gender discrimination run rampant through policies and systems
